Stephanie's bespoke care service: an introduction

Before the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s interim findings concerning quality of care within the home, we were of the view that the provision of home care was sadly lacking. Home visits were too short and poorly structured; staff were inadequately trained, supervised, motivated and supported; individual continuity of care was not maintained; clients’ families were not sufficiently involved; and care services were generally not sufficiently accountable.

As a result of a group of carers getting together, bringing experience of different aspects of care provision, an optimum provision of home care was agreed. In essence it is:

  • Continuity of care through a named designated carer who has principal care responsibility for their client;
  • A minimum of two visits each day;
  • Morning and evening visits lasting for a minimum of 1 hour each;
  • Timetabling of visits that permit morning and evening visits to be extended to 2 hours each visit;
  • Carers involved with a client sharing patient information to ensure seamless provision of care;
  • A high level of access to training and sharing in-house experience through 360 degree supervisions and support groups;
  • Monitoring of care through an on-line diary for each individual patient;
  • On-line video log each day or each week.

This brought about the birth of Stephanie’s bespoke care service, which is a co-operative of carers co-ordinated and supervised by Stephanie Rose. It is a not-for-profit organisation where carers are paid a living wage. There is an emphasis on team support with the high level of client care being mirrored in the care and support of staff.

Due to the numbers of carers required for such a high level of client care, a limit is placed on the numbers of clients that can be taken by the service. A waiting list is available for those who cannot currently be accommodated.
